CHAPTER 25. The Snowy Mountains

“There is no doubt why they named this place what they named it.” Clinging to the ends of his coat, Noakh was having a very hard time. His boots were sinking into the dense snow and his vision extended only as far as Hilzen, a few steps ahead of him. The rest was eternally white. It was like a white dessert. The snow fell with an incessant softness and the wind continued to howl in their ears. “Are you sure it’s around here, Hilzen?”

Noakh thought it impossible not to get lost in a place where, no matter where he looked, there was only one thing. Snow.

Hilzen had insisted on leading the march through the mountains, using the map that Dleheim had given to them. But he wasn’t sure of the route. How could he be? Apparently, it was as simple as continuing straight on the road that climbed through the pass… something that was not so easy to do when the snow would not stop falling. According to his map, they should have already arrived in a village called Ograbh, but around them there was only snow.

Noakh, who was already fed up with the snow and growing cold, had an idea. “Why didn’t this occur to me before?” Laughing, he drew Distra from its sheath. He made it burst into flames, providing the warmth he needed. He realized that the force inside Distra probably did not like the idea of acting as a torch. However, he hoped that it understood Noakh’s actions were for a greater good.

Hilzen could not deny how practical the torch was, although at first he did not like it. He slowed his pace so that he might enjoy the sword’s heat on his back.

“Don’t worry, Hilzen,” Noakh said. “If I see someone approaching I’ll make the flames disappear… Maybe this is training, I’ve never tested how long I can keep the flame burning.”

“What do you mean?” Hilzen asked.

“Somehow, the sword consumes my energy. At first I just could not even keep it lit without feeling exhausted.” Noakh did not know how, but one way or another the flames were linked to himself. Perhaps this explained why only the phoenix could use it. Realizing how hard it was for him to keep Distra’s blade engulfed in flames, he reflected, “I can’t help but admire King Wulkan. Not only was he able to handle the two fire swords at the same time, but also, as my father had told me, he could summon the power to keep both swords in flames for as long as he wanted to.”

Hilzen shook his head disapprovingly. Now he’s praising the man that killed his mother and made him become an exile, he thought before returning to focus on his search for some place of reference. If the route they were traveling were the right one, they should not be very far from the mountain village of Ograbh.

The road seemed slightly more peaceful with Distra lit. Certainly, the light from the flames did not show the travelers their way, but its warmth, at least, was pleasant.
